Roman Abramovich first took ownership of Chelsea in June 2003, purchasing the club from Ken Bates. During his 19-year ownership, Chelsea won 18 trophies, including two Champions League titles, five Premier League championships, and the 2022 FIFA Club World Cup. However, Abramovich put Chelsea up for sale in February 2022, following Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine.

Todd Boehly and his consortium, including Clearlake Capital, Mark Walter, and Hansjoerg Wyss, took over Chelsea in May 2022 for a reported record £4.25bn fee, with a guaranteed investment of £1.75bn into the club. Boehly assumed joint control and equal governance of Chelsea, while Hansjoerg Wyss and Mark Walter also hold shares in the club as part of the consortium.

Sport Teams Ownership

In addition to owning Chelsea, Boehly also owns 20% of the Los Angeles Dodgers, the Women’s National Basketball Association outfit Los Angeles Sparks, fantasy sports brand DraftKings, and esports organization Cloud9. He and Walter also own 27% of the Los Angeles Lakers, and Clearlake Capital has explored purchasing a National Football League franchise.

As of April 2023, Forbes lists Boehly's personal net worth at $5.3bn (£4.2bn), while Clearlake Capital claims its assets are worth over $70bn (£56bn). Feliciano and Eghbali, co-owners of Clearlake Capital, have net worths of $4.3bn (£3.4bn) each.

Chelsea Performance Since Takeover

Since Boehly’s consortium became the owners of Chelsea, the club is yet to add to their trophy cabinet. Their first Premier League campaign under the new ownership was disappointing, with losses in the FA Cup and Champions League.

Managerial Changes

Boehly’s consortium made significant managerial changes, sacking Thomas Tuchel and appointing Graham Potter and Frank Lampard before Mauricio Pochettino took over from July 2023.
